replacing wooden window sill?

I have a window sill that is rotten. How hard is this to replace? How is it connected to the window? Do you need to replace the sash to take the old one out? Once you make a new sill is it difficult to put it in? Any insights are appreciated!
Answer: It's not that hard. I found one that was rotten and pulled it out thinking I would have to get my older brother to fix it (carpenter). Just by looking at it I made a new one out of 2X material, some cutting and painting, caulking and nailing. If I can do it anyone can.
