how to make a wooden window valance?
I am going to make a wooden window valance for my daughters room and just wanted some info. what is the best way? it is a bay window with three windows. what is the easiest way to find the angle to join the wood together to form one solid valance. right now I am just doing a simple "box" design...I might add decorative moulding to the top later. any info would be great!! thanks in advance :-)
Answer: There are compound angle guages that can be used. The one I have looks like a large compass with a dual sided vernier dial and knob that locks it's position. Instead of a poiter and pencil it has 2, 1"wide flat acrylic bars that join at a 3" circular top. One overlaps the other so they can rotate to open or close the angle. Just put up against the place you wish to measure, open til both sides touch, and lock down the set knob. the inner circles have calibrated compass markings to the degree, with pointers on them to give you the precise angle. Remember if you plan to joint the facials that hte angle will be half for each side. If you have difficulty finding this guage, locate a shopsmith store or distributor as this was my source some years back. Decorative facias are your choice though ranging from straight no frills, to country desings. If you have a good scroll saw you may even to choose to cut hearts into the fronts. I once used a drill press with a couple different sized flat drills, or speed bores to make the radiuses all the same and then cut between the arches. If you have a router you can dress these up with decorative edges as well!
